Buddhism schools for foreigners in Nepal thrive despite upheaval

KATHMANDU - Since hippies first beat the overland travel trail to Nepal in the 1960s, thousands of foreigners have flocked to monasteries to study Buddhism.

Today, despite political upheaval and a decade-long Maoist insurgency, they continue to come and there are more schools than ever, many now home to Westerners who donned Buddhist robes and never left.

Thousands of masters and teachers fled Tibet with the invasion of the Chinese in 1950 and large numbers settled in neighbouring Nepal, where many Nepalis had been practising forms of Tibetan Buddhism for centuries.

Perched on a hill with spectacular views of Kathmandu, Kopan Monastery was the first to start offering foreigners meetings with Tibetan Buddhist lamas from the foothills of Everest in 1969.

The tradition continues to this day, and thousands of foreigners have passed through.

GIBRALTAR – (PRESS RELEASE) -- Offering the largest guaranteed prize pool in the history of backgammon, PartyGammon.com today announced that it will stage the PartyGammon.com Million at the famous Atlantis Resort on Paradise Island in The Bahamas, on January 21st-25th , 2007. Half of the field of 128 players will be filled by online qualifiers and the other half from players who directly buy-in to the tournament.

That event has now moved to Monte Carlo, but the US$500,000 guaranteed first prize of the PartyGammon.com Million is estimated to exceed this year's World Championship top prize five times over!

New hope for Haiti

Addressing the opening session of the three-day Caribbean Community (CARICOM) summit being held in St. Kitts on Monday, Haiti's President Rene Preval expressed hope that at the end of his five-year term as president, Haiti "will have taken decisive steps on the long and difficult road of democratic stability and sustainable development."

Probably more so than any other member of CARICOM, The Bahamas is hoping that this optimistic expectation by the leader of one of the region's poorest countries turns out to be prophetic. Indeed, should Haiti succeed in establishing a sustained period of "democratic stability," such an accomplishment most certainly will have a positive impact on the very serious illegal Haitian immigrant problem that The Bahamas has had to grapple with for the past several decades.

Bahamas Football Association makes plans for Academy

Boys and girls have been hand-picked by the Bahamas Football Association to take part in their 'National Academy' this summer. Formerly the Centre of Excellence, the three-week youth development programme designed by the BFA, focuses on improving individual player's technical skills and abilities, as well as their knowledge and understanding of football (soccer).

The summer programme, which is now in its fourth year, opened at the beginning of this week (July 3) and will end July 21st.

The players in the camps were selected from the various youth programmes in New Providence and from the Family Islands.

"We've got kids down here from Freeport, Abaco, Exuma, and even Andros," BFA's Technical Director Gary White pointed out.

"When we started this programme about four years ago we only had about 60 kids.
