PGA TOUR: Dufner thrilled with play at LaSalle Bank, US Open"The thing I will take away from this week, over and above the great experience, is a gauge on where my game stacks up against the best players in the world,"he said. "This was a great test for me. I'll see where I need to get to to play on the next level."Actually, Dufner has been there and done that once before -- at the U.S. Open and the next -- golf's highest -- level. Dufner played in the 2001 U.S. Open, where he missed the cut, before earning exempt status on the Nationwide Tour after Monday qualifying for the Nationwide's Hershey Open. A 12th place finish got him into the Wichita Open and he won by shooting 22 under. He played his way onto the PGA TOUR in 2004 by finishing 10th on the Nationwide Tour money list in '03 thanks to 10 top-10 finishes. Mauritius: Living in Mauritius - At home with CreoleNo one is sure exactly when it happens, but after the meeting porcelain has been collected, corporate Mauritians, masters of linguistic osmosis with their eloquent French and English, throw off the powdered wigs of formality and "get down" in Creole. It's the language that binds Mauritians, so to speak, and it is uniquely theirs, no matter what linguists say. Over 71% of the Mauritian population considered Creole as their "mother tongue" according to the 2000 census and it has grown since then. And it's not to be confused with a dialect either. Creole is a language based on two parent languages, but it has so many distinctive features that haven't been inherited from either parent language. A dialect is something that develops from only one language, according to the Concise Oxford Dictionary.Common sense equals a safe FourthWith tomorrow being the Fourth of July, it's a good time to remind people of some basic fireworks do's and don'ts to ensure a safe and happy Independence Day.Monroe Police Chief Fred Kelley said the department usually doesn't receive many complaints about fireworks. When people call to complain though, Kelley said it's usually because someone's setting off fireworks the week before or the week after the Fourth. Kelley said Monroe police don't go out looking for anyone with illegal fireworks but if they're responding to a complaint and they find illegal fireworks the police generally just confiscate them. In instances where there are a lot of illegal fireworks, Kelley said a municipal citation can be issued ranging from $25 for children 14 and under up to about $160 for adults.
A year and no oilCaribbean countries still waiting for promised petrol from Venezuela.MIRANDA LEITSINGER Associated Press Writer SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico -- One year after 13 Caribbean countries signed a deal with Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez to buy oil under preferential terms, a majority of them have not received a single drop of fuel, while those that have are still paying high prices at the pump. Cash-strapped Caribbean countries have welcomed the pact known as Petrocaribe as a way to counter soaring oil prices. But eight nations say they haven't gotten fuel shipments yet, largely because they're figuring out how to handle them. The program has gotten bogged down because many governments don't have state-owned docking or storage facilities, or the know-how to run an oil business -- a task they previously left to private companies. Malta to receive warning letter over spring huntingThe European Commission has sent a first warning letter to Malta over the spring hunting of two species of quails and turtle doves. Meanwhile, in a press release, the Maltese government said that it has not yet received the notification for which the authorities will have to give its position in not more than two months. The hunting of these migratory birds begins in March, during their return from Africa to their breeding grounds in Europe. On the basis of information provided by the Maltese authorities, the Commission believes that alternative solutions to spring hunting exist, i.e. hunting in the autumn. However the government said that it does not agree with the European Commissions position and will do its utmost to defend its case. In the light of the reply or absence of a reply from Malta, the Commission may decide to address a "Reasoned Opinion" (final written warning). | ||||
