Response to Cuban Ambassador

I am compelled to respond to two recent press releases by the Cuban Ambassador to The Bahamas, Mr Felix Wilson Hernandez. After more than thirty years of being involved with Human Rights issues, I have drawn certain logical conclusions about dictators, their embassies and their diplomatic representatives, when it comes to presenting the truth objectively to the public. They portray an idyllic society or country.

By carefully and deliberately controlling the flow of information, it is possible to create an "Animal Farm" society. Anyone who challenges this process or offers a contrasting point of view, is deemed an "enemy" of the state and is punished in some way. In such a brainwashed and controlled nation, the reality of truth is an alien concept. Ambassador Wilson Hernandez, like others of his kind, mastered the art of deceit, by his representation and manipulation of the facts.

Veejooruth's sweet delights

CHEF PURMESSUR Veejooruth is the reputable chef now at Sandals Whitehouse European Village and Spa, who gained extra prominence when he was invited to Turks and Caicos Islands to prepare Chief Minister Michael Missick's wedding pastries.

Chef Purmessur Veejooruth, 40, certified executive, having worked in the island before, was no stranger to Minister Missick. Also, he has a close relationship with Jamaica as his wife is a Jamaican.

Chef Veejooruth can take a dash of flour and whip it into a fantastic and tasty treat. He has been in the kitchen since he was 15 years old learning the trade from his mother, Lilawutee Rechoye. However, in 1993 he joined a bakery shop in Mauritius Island, coast of South Africa, his hometown, where he further learnt the art of baking. He recalled that his first experience was baking bread on a wood fire.

Escambia students place in national history event

One Escambia County student ranked No. 4 for his category and six other Escambia students ranked in the top 21 of their categories for the 2006 National History Day competition.

Luke Evans, a sixth-grade student at the PATS Center, earned fourth place in the nation for his junior historical performance, Jonathan Walker: Taking a Stand Against Slavery. Walker was punished by branding and jail time for attempting to free slaves from Pensacola by taking them to the Bahamas.

The National History Day contest selected 2,000 students who topped their state competitions to vie for national prestige. The event was June 11 through Thursday at University of Maryland.

The other Escambia County students who ranked in the top 21: Middle school students Brian Hagerott of the PATS Center, Hayley Heath of the PATS Center and Ferry Pass Middle, Amanda Patton of the PATS Center and Kristopher Wolfe of the PATS Center; and high school students Jarred McCovery of Pensacola Highs International Baccalaureate program and Jeff Miller of West Florida High School.

Tourism should target terminally ill

A concerned Bahamian citizen is lobbying for the Ministry of Tourism to venture into a new tourism market by targeting terminally ill people whose last wish may be to visit The Bahamas.

President of The Bahamas Love and Care Foundation, Sam Williams, is calling for the government to create a partnership with organisations such as Make A Wish Foundation to attract a new market of tourists whose visit will go beyond a desire to experience sun, sand and sea.

"I keep asking the Ministry of Tourism to meet with them so that we can have one of the gardens dedicated to ill tourists who come to The Bahamas on a wish."

Mr Williams said hosting such people is his calling and that he has been pushing for quite a while now for tourism officials to include the initiative in their programme.
