Darden Is Delicious

Darden Restaurants (NYSE: DRI) just can't seem to do anything wrong at the moment. Earnings-per-share growth came in at 21% for the fiscal year ended May 28, above 20% for the second year in a row. Revenue and EPS for the fourth quarter came in right at expectations, while EPS for the year beat estimates. Same-store sales growth was positive for the seventh quarter in a row overall and reached the 47th quarter in a row for Olive Garden. That's almost 12 years of quarterly comps growth, folks!

Gross, operating, and net margins all improved for both the fourth quarter and the year. This follows the trend I noted in my earnings forecast article. Looking at another metric, average inventory for fiscal 2006 fell as a percentage of revenue, compared with fiscal 2005, despite a rising cost of seafood -- the stock in trade at Red Lobster.

Elaborate sting disconnects phone scammers

It was an unprecedented meeting, and not the kind you'd expect to find in a conference room in the middle of the FBI's Red Bank office. At one table sat a former U.S. attorney from West Virginia; a California braggart; a Freehold con artist. All were criminals who made millions from nationwide telemarketing scams. They had been caught and, in return for reduced jail time, agreed to betray each other and wear wires for the FBI.

They had not expected to see each other again. Now, as they sat face to face, tempers flared. Fists almost flew. And the agents in the room let it happen.

"It was like the Jerry Springer show," recalls Susan Pigliacelli, the FBI agent from the Red Bank office who headed what turned out to be the largest and most complex telemarketing prosecution in the United States.

The Nassau Guardian - www.thenassauguardian.com

It is with the greatest respect and profound regrets that I take issue with statements and suggestions made in the Tribune editorials, dated 27 and 28 June, 2006. The subject of those editorials allude to the Police Service in The Bahamas.

In both the editorials it was recommended that U.K. Police Officers be recruited for service in The Bahamas. The reasons stated are as follows: (a) There is a definitive insinuation that the crime situation in The Bahamas parallels or compares with the crime situation in Jamaica and/or Trinidad & Tobago, where U.K. Police Officers have been recruited into their Police services. Unlike T&T, the Police Service in The Bahamas has performed efficiently and effectively and with the introduction of the Community policing and Urban Renewal initiatives - two corollaries of the Royal Bahamas Police Force that are the envy of Police services throughout the western hemisphere - the Police Service has achieved an above 70 per cent detection rate.

San Jose Grandmother Wins $100,000 Worth of Hugs and Kisses

SACRAMENTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 8, 2006--The Fourth of July has come and gone, and some lucky winner is $110 million richer thanks to SuperLOTTO Plus(R), but that doesn't mean the California State Lottery has stopped giving away money as contestants won a total of $147,500 on The Big Spin show which aired statewide on July 8.

Sonja Clark from San Jose is the mother of five and grandmother of eight. While not a regular lottery player, on a whim, Clark bought two Big Spin Scratchers, uncovering SPIN-SPIN-SPIN on one of them and earning a trip directly to the big wheel. Clark put her good luck to use and won an impressive $100,000. Not bad at all considering her $2 investment to get there. With her prize, Clark plans to spoil her grandchildren and take the entire family on an all expenses paid vacation.
