Kerzner Names Gehry As Architect For Singapore Casino Bid

SINGAPORE -(Dow Jones)- Kerzner International Ltd. (KZL) and CapitaLand Ltd. (C31.SG) Tuesday named Frank O. Gehry as architect and designer for the casino resort they are proposing to build on Singapore's Sentosa island.
Gehry, who is best known for the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain, will be up against architects appointed by two rival bidders: a tie-up between Genting International PLC (G13.SG) and Universal Studios, and a consortium involving casino resort developer Eighth Wonder and Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide (HOT).
The Sentosa casino, which will be built on a 49-hectare site, will be Singapore's second after the US$3.6 billion Marina Bay Sands, which is expected to open its doors in 2009.
According to the Singapore Tourism Board, the Sentosa casino resort "is envisaged to be a large-scale iconic development and a 'must-visit' attraction for visitors.

Cable news should stop its increasing frivolity

I thought I'd turned to the wrong station, but MSNBC's logo flashed at me from the bottom-right corner. Confused, I put down the remote. I then watched as Joe Scarborough of "Scarborough Country" grilled a specially assembled panel on Britney Spears' supposed breast implants, her decision to pose nude while pregnant, and why in the world 12-year-old boys like to watch her dance half naked. After this stimulating discussion, the feud between Star Jones and Barbara Walters was analyzed, and the show ended with a picture of the winner of the World's Ugliest Dog Contest. Worse yet, Scarborough is a former congressman. No wonder Congress never does anything productive. Aside from a brief breaking-news update on terrorism and a short conversation with a man investigating Jiffy Lube, I felt as if I had just watched a poor episode of Entertainment Tonight.

Soccer gets land donation

Because soccer is a growing sport, particularly among the youngsters of Grand Bahama, having more space and more fields on which the kids can learn and play the game was quickly becoming more of a demand than anything else.

Well, that demand has been met by the Grand Bahama Port Authority.

On Wednesday the Port announced that it has donated three acres of land to the Freeport Rugby and Football Club for a new soccer field. Good news for officials of the Grand Bahama Football Association.

"Over the years, the Principals of the Grand Bahama Port Authority, Sir Jack Hayward, the late Edward St. George and Lady Henrietta St. George, are well known for their commitment to the youth of Freeport and Grand Bahama," said Geneva Rutherford, who represented the Port Authority, during a press conference on Wednesday morning.

Google should buy Starbucks -- NOW!

I have wondered out loud about Google many times, if you have been following my blog posts. In my 10 Reasons I think Google is going down number ten was the Sheldon equivalency test; what could you buy instead? This is a very important basis for valuation. You would do this when deciding between auto insurance policies, beers, or laundry detergent, so why not a stock purchase? It is all about the allocation of capital resources, price and value.

In my example at the time I used the combined value of Anheuser Busch (BUD) $35B + Federal Express (FDX) $34.5B + Starbucks (SBUX) $28B + Harley Davidson (HDI) $14.5B + Black & Decker (BKD) $6.5B and Intuitive Surgical (ISRG) $3.5B which were equal in value to Google's capitalization of $122B. As I am writing this, Google is presently valued at $127.5B, so we could add a seventh company, perhaps Cummin's (CMI) at 5.5B or maybe another growth stock American Eagle Outfitters (AEOS) at $5.3B.

Key tips for hurricane season cruising

Year-round Caribbean cruising's on an upswing as lines ranging from Princess to Carnival are keeping some of their biggest and splashiest ships sailing in the region throughout summer and fall. And yet, aside from experiencing slightly steamier tropical weather than in winter months, cruising the Caribbean during the summer and fall otherwise comes with one pretty big caveat: Hurricane season can wreak havoc on your vacation.

In 1998, Windjammer's Fantome, which deposited passengers safely on land before it sailed out to sea to avoid an off-the-charts violent hurricane, tragically lost its ship and crew. One year later, Carnival's Tropicale lost power as it was sailing out of the way of another storm (though no lives were lost). Disaster stories like these are the exception rather than the rule, but if you're planning a Caribbean cruise from June through November, it pays to be aware of the possibilities.
