Bahama Islands News, Articles and Information

Fredericksburg, sideways

FREDERICKSBURG -- So, is this capital of the Texas Hill Country the next Yountville? Roll your eyes all you want, but the comparison between the Hill Country and Napa Valley has been suggested by no less than Southern Living magazine and CNN.com in recent months.

If the cynics among you haven't been here recently, surprises are in store. Yes, the deep German influence of the founders still prevails, but there's more to this town than the sausage-beer-knickknack stop of a decade ago. It's still a handy romantic getaway with more than 350 bed-and-breakfasts, but the signature "country-cute" appeal is a fading memory, replaced by a new sophistication.

You'll find a real wine country with gracious dining to satisfy discerning palates, as well as galleries and shopping to compare with more urbane settings.

Antiguan chefs ready for competition

Months of arduous training and live rehearsals will soon culminate to a competition in the annual culinary competition and all-Caribbean food and beverage showcase, Taste of the Caribbean 2006® for the members of the Antigua & Barbuda culinary team and 15 other teams from across the region, who travel this week to Miami, Florida.

The event, presented by the Caribbean Hotel Association (CHA) and Bahama Breeze, will take place at the Hyatt Regency Miami, 26-29 June.

The competition features 16 teams of Caribbean chefs, each of whom won local culinary contests in their home countries. The teams will participate in qualifying rounds of “live kitchen" competitions, preparing a three-course meal for 25 people in under four hours, using a “mystery basket" of ingredients that is kept secret until the competition begins.

Reality drinks

It's a Saturday night in downtown Pontiac, and the club is jumping. The evening is sponsored by a Top 40 radio station, and it's at Clutch Cargo's, one of the coolest spots in the loop. But this night is special -- as evidenced by the bright lights set up by the Fox Reality camera crews and the clubhoppers gathering outside the converted church.

They're expecting the arrival of four stars of MTV's popular reality shows, "Real World" and "Road Rules." Mark Long -- the spiked-blond-haired guy from the first "Road Rules" who got caught in a love triangle between "Real World San Diego" Robin and "Real World Chicago" Tonya -- is already here. He's the guy in front of the camera with a microphone, taping teasers for the latest installment of MTV's "Real World/Road Rules Challenge." Some fans wave in the background or jump up and down.

Cause for concern

More than three weeks after the reported malarial outbreak in Exuma, the only conclusive evidence the Ministry of Health can give to the public is that "it is imported."

That is good to know but that is not all there is because the worried residents would like to know, imported from where? On Wednesday, the Minister of Health, Dr Bernard J Nottage, told members in the House of Assembly that the outbreak was under control and with the several surveys that are ongoing, the source of the infections will ultimately be revealed.

If it is accepted that all the people identified with malaria were infected in Exuma, then it is a certainty that the female anopheles mosquito is present on the island, and it should be determined how it got there and the suspected numbers.
