Factor in one boat winning first and second place in the spearfish shootout and one taking home the top two spots in the cobia shootout, cash pay outs were flying around the scales, too. Although the four pending records were not among the 27 different rodeo categories, one was a near world record. Before the fish can be declared a state saltwater record, each has to be certified by the Commission on Marine Resources, which is nothing more than a formality.
Island Grill heads for BarbadosONE OF the most guarded secrets in Barbados is the level of revenue generated within the local fast food sector.Yet it has to be significant, otherwise the major players in Barbados would not have been expanding, the country would not have been attractive to many of the foreign ones knocking on its doors, and Government would not have been reluctant to open the sector to competition from outside the region. All of this comes in the wake of plans by Island Grill, a Jamaican fast food franchise to open an outlet in Barbados, under a partnership with Goddard Enterprises Limited. "We plan to locate the restaurant at the airport in Barbados," said Thalia Lyn, managing director of Island Grill. Lyn said officials from the Goddard group in Barbados were to visit Jamaica to plan out the details, deadlines and procedures of the agreement and to finalise the deal.
Christie in flight scareA private jet flying Prime Minister Perry Christie back to Nassau from the Caribbean was involved in a dramatic landing just hours before he spoke at the renaming ceremony at the country's international airport. The jet was chartered from a Miami company. News of the incident was not made public, and although no one on board the aircraft was injured it was a frightening experience. Mr. Christie told a colleague that it was a "harrowing" incident. The aircraft was returning from the CARICOM heads of government meeting in St. Kitts when it developed "technical" problems. It is understood that the plane suffered a hydraulic leak, which affected the braking system. The Guardian understands that the aircraft had braking problems and this caused a full alert at the airport with fire tenders racing to the jet as it touched down shortly before midnight.
