Smith's camp was a success

National Football League player Alex Smith and his dad Ed Smith, the first Bahamian to play in the NFL, hosted a one-day American football camp over the Independence holiday weekend. The camp was one of the ways the Smiths thought they could give back to the Bahamian community. "The idea behind this camp is just to expose the kids to the basics of football, and who better to show them than an actual NFL players," said Smith senior.

Smith became the first Bahamian to play in the NFL back in the 1970's. He played defensive end with the Denver Broncos. Smith still resides in Colorado, but frequently visits Nassau "about once a month," he says. "Before playing in the NFL some people helped me along the way," said Smith. "We just want to do the same for Bahamian kids. I've never forgotten where I came from and I've tried to instill the same things in Alex and my other kids.
