'Choo Choo' ready for CABOFE title fight

Jermaine 'Choo Choo' Mackey has come a long way from a budding amateur boxer to being known as one of the best up-and-coming young professionals in the Caribbean.

With a flawless 10-0 record, The Bahamas' Super Middleweight Champion is now set to go after the World Boxing Council's Caribbean Boxing Federation (CABOFE) Title. Standing in his way is the pride of Barbados, Marcus 'Marvelous' Thomas, and with the fight set for July 28 at the Radisson Cable Beach Resort, Mackey said that he is more than up to the challenge.

"It is a pleasure to fight for the WBC title. I would love to make my record 11-0 and then from there go on to fight for the British Commonwealth title and eventually winning a world title. I am doing everything, and I am in tip-top shape. I am getting ready for this fight and I am hungry," said Mackey.

Hurricanes cost BTC $50m

The Bahamas Telecommu-nications Company Limited's (BTC) Chief Executive, Leon Williams, revealed yesterday in an exclusive interview with The Nassau Guardian that hurricanes cost the company $50 million last year.

And despite predictions of an active season this summer, BTC is hoping to escape another massive financial hit.

Last year's storm season caused setbacks and delays, but BTC is setting up new technology that should en-sure minimal damage. "Hurr-icanes cost us $50 million last years," said Mr Williams. I'm hoping we don't end up with any setbacks this time.

"[Over the years], Hurricane Floyd cost us $34 million and Hurricane Michelle cost us another $16 million," he added. "The last thing we need this year is another hurricane," he added.

Finally, time to give it a rest

CHICAGO -- The scoreboard in right-center field was full of ``F"s, as in final scores. Even the West Coast games were complete. As a matter of fact, the Sunday night game between St. Louis and Houston was underway.

All-Star break getaway planes were being missed. Stomachs were growling. It goes without saying that most of the 39,335 who had been in attendance at U.S. Cellular Field were on their way home, with many able to watch several innings on television long after they had vacated their seats.

But the ballplayers kept playing. What choice did they have? You know that business about the great beauty of baseball being that it doesn't have a clock? Well, we noticed.

It coulda/shoulda/woulda been over after nine innings, but Jermaine Dye hit a two-out, game-tying home run off -- believe it or not -- Jonathan Papelbon.

Darden Is Delicious

Darden Restaurants (NYSE: DRI) just can't seem to do anything wrong at the moment. Earnings-per-share growth came in at 21% for the fiscal year ended May 28, above 20% for the second year in a row. Revenue and EPS for the fourth quarter came in right at expectations, while EPS for the year beat estimates. Same-store sales growth was positive for the seventh quarter in a row overall and reached the 47th quarter in a row for Olive Garden. That's almost 12 years of quarterly comps growth, folks!

Gross, operating, and net margins all improved for both the fourth quarter and the year. This follows the trend I noted in my earnings forecast article. Looking at another metric, average inventory for fiscal 2006 fell as a percentage of revenue, compared with fiscal 2005, despite a rising cost of seafood -- the stock in trade at Red Lobster.

Gas-saving getaways

Herewith, some getaways that minimize driving -- or avoid it altogether. For planning purposes, we've added in $200 per day for dining for a couple (romantic dinners aren't cheap), $100 per day for a family of four heading to a family destination, $150 per day if the family is going urban. Note that airfare and hotel rates change rapidly and vary widely by date, so the exact prices below may not apply when you book.

Remember, too, that most ways you travel include some form of fuel -- which this year often means fuel surcharges on airfares and even on a few cruises. Even at $3 per gallon, driving can still be the cheapest way to go.

RIDE THE RAILS

Taking a train offers a change of pace. A trip from Miami to Charleston, S.C., for instance, is almost 14 hours each way, so you won't do it for a weekend.

Raising Pirates' Mast on Bahamian Shores

American consumers, who form the basis of The Bahamas' core tourism market, are doing anything from flipping magazine pages, to pumping gas, to picking up newspapers and popping M&Ms, when suddenly they find themselves gazing at beckoning photos of a sandy paradise awash in the golden smile of an endless sun, just hours or minutes away from home.

The Bahamas' offerings haven't changed. The sea, sun and sand sparkle brilliantly as they patiently await the country's visitors; but the Ministry of Tourism and its Public Relations firm, Weber Shandwick, have pole-vaulted over the traditional, in new ways by which they seek to sell these natural goodies to an ever-expanding market.

The Ministry has clutched the hands of new marketing partners with mighty billboards in the U.S.

USA dominates 4th NACAC U-23 Champs

Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic - The USA renewed its dominance at the 4th NACAC under-23 Championships, held at the Felix Sanchez stadium in Santo Domingo (7 - 9 July), with the attendance of over 500 athletes from 28 countries.

The large US delegation of 87 members went unchallenged during the three days of competition, winning medals in almost all events they entered. They collected 59 medals (28 gold, 22 silver and nine bronze), followed by Cuba (9-3-8), which made its debut at the event, after being absent in the last three editions.
