Caribbean offers to reimburse passport cost to US travelers

At the recently concluded 2006 Caribbean Hotel Industry Conference organized by the Caribbean Hotel Association (CHA), tourism leaders expressed serious concerns over the proposed Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative requiring Americans to have their passports ready by January 1, 2007 on traveling back from the Caribbean by air and sea. The issue is not so much the requirement as the effective date itself affecting US vacationers planning trips to the CARICOM.

According to a research by the WTTC on behalf of the Caribbean Hotels Association, visitor market share from the United States to the Caribbean and the percentage of those visitors who do not use a valid US passport will decline dramatically. Currently, about 20 percent of Americans do not possess a passport. Based on the WTTC research, total visitor exports earnings in the Caribbean region are estimated at US$20.7 billion.

'Pirates' Director Is Relaxed At The Helm

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. -- Doing his Thespian best during a photo shoot at a posh hotel, Gore Verbinski grimaces from the back of a long conference table, under a chandelier.

The pose surrounds the director of Disney's "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise in an executive aura that seems out of place for a creative type. But Verbinski has made peace with the big-business part of his job.

He also has learned that a little mutiny helps.

"Directing movies for giant corporations can't last forever and if you know that, you can kind of approach each film being sort of brave and bold," he says in a recent interview.

The 42-year-old Verbinski isn't walking the plank for Disney just yet. "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest," the sequel to the surprise 2003 hit "Curse of the Black Pearl," opens Friday.

Cash-strapped Caribbean countries have welcomed the pact known as Petrocaribe as a way to counter soaring oil prices. But eight nations say they haven\'t gotten fuel shipments yet, largely because they\'re figuring out how to handle them.

The program has gotten bogged down because many governments don\'t have state-owned docking or storage facilities, or the know-how of running an oil business -- a task they previously left to private companies.

While Chavez\'s critics say he is using \"oil diplomacy\" to build anti-U.S. political alliances, many Caribbean leaders say they believe the program will be genuinely helpful and are determined to take advantage of it.

\"We\'re charting uncharted waters here. It has to be done right,\" said Earl Bousquet, a St. Lucia government spokesman.
