One year after 13 Caribbean countries signed a deal with Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez to buy oil under preferential terms, a majority of them have not received a single drop of fuel, while those that have are still paying high prices at the pump.Cash-strapped Caribbean countries have welcomed the pact known as Petrocaribe as a way to counter soaring oil prices. But eight nations say they haven't gotten fuel shipments yet, largely because they're figuring out how to handle them.
The program has gotten bogged down because many governments don't have state-owned docking or storage facilities, or the know-how of running an oil business -- a task they previously left to private companies.
While Chavez's critics say he is using "oil diplomacy" to build anti-U.S. political alliances, many Caribbean leaders say they believe the program will be genuinely helpful and are determined to take advantage of it.
Officials seek feedback
Local government officials in Inagua met last night to discuss Immigration Minister Shane Gibson's plans to possibly relocate The Detention Centre (the Centre) to a south-eastern island.Island Administrator Neil Campbell told The Guardian last night, that officers in his department met at a Council meeting to discuss the relocation plans. "What I would have told them, is to go out and really get a feel of the people and the powers that be will come in a little later," Mr Campbell explained. "That was one of the items on the agenda for last night."
Meanwhile, Mr Campbell also told The Guardian that a town meeting will be held in the near future to give natives of Inagua, a chance to voice their opinions with regard to the relocation plans.
"We are planning a town meeting just to consult with the individuals here," said Mr Campbell.
Pilot dies in crash of twin-engine plane in Fort Pierce
FORT PIERCE — A black twin-engine plane crashed into a wooded lot Sunday, killing the pilot and narrowly missing a stretch of highway and a family restaurant filled with lunchtime diners.The pilot, identified as Stephen P. Hodges of Myrtle Beach, S.C., was believed to be on his way to Tennessee and was the only person on board, St. Lucie County Sheriff's officials said.
