Swamp of DeathThe battle to rid the Bahamas of the deadly strain of mosquitoes in Exuma is being fought by a small band of experts, on the ground.A short time after the first malaria case was reported June 8, officers from the Department of Environmental Health flew into Exuma to search for working anopheles mosquitoes. They have also tried to reduce the number of local mosquitoes on that island as well. During a trip to the island The Nassau Guardian reporting team has seen first hand the work being done. Dramatic new changes at Winn DixieDamages from the twin hurricanes of 2004 sped up the renovation process at the Winn Dixie downtown which consumers concur is long overdue.Ken Burns, managing director of Bahamas Supermarkets, in an interview with The Freeport News Monday admitted a make-over at the downtown location was in the works, but the major roof damage in September of 2004 did help to push the project along. The new decor at the downtown store has taken on a dramatic new change with a Bahamian flare. Burns pointed out, however, the interior is similar to that of the Winn Dixie stores in the United States with brighter walls and less colour. Cognizant of the dark, old look the store portrayed, the managing director said it had much to do with the paint, lighting and flooring.
