Plan cruise trips with an eye on storm season
HOUSTON - Seven-day Carnival and Royal Caribbean cruises from Galveston for $500-$600 in September. A 50 percent discount for your companion through August at Club Meds on three Caribbean islands. A fourth night free at the luxurious Four Seasons on Great Exuma in the Bahamas. Significant savings at other resorts.That's good.
But many travelers will jump on these deals without giving a thought to why prices are discounted.
That's bad.
Put this reality in capital letters: IT'S HURRICANE SEASON.
Now, take a deep breath. Don't panic. Don't automatically shy away from that cruise to Mexico, that all-inclusive on Jamaica, that diving expedition in the Cayman Islands.
Just be aware that Mother Nature has a habit of disrupting agendas during summer and fall.
Bahamas building boom raises concerns
HUB CAY, Bahamas - Walt McCrory meanders past the cottages going up on this picturesque private island he and a group of investors bought two years ago.Chub Cay has no permanent residents, but the Du Ponts and other prominent Americans have holed up here for the past half-century. While guests are only a 45-minute flight from the United States, they feel like a world away, free to sunbathe on secluded beaches that boast some of the Bahamas' best sport fishing.
But McCrory, a lawyer-turned-developer, and his partners, including builder Bob Moss and Florida boat show promoter Kaye Pearson, know Chub needs a face lift. Aside from the 69 tin-roofed bungalows that will fetch more than $1 million each, they're building a clubhouse with winding staircases and a lagoon-shaped pool to go with a marina that opened June 15.

The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ted Ramirez of Victoria. She is the granddaughter of the late Jesus and Loretta Tamayo, Lupe Rivera of Victoria, the late Martin Rivera and Frank Ramirez Sr. of Corpus Christi.The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Larry Royer, and Mr. and Mrs. David Snell, all of Victoria. He is the grandson of the late Dean K. Knight and Nell Knight Elder of Victoria.
Roxanne Ramirez, sister of the bride, and Mary Jane Magallan, cousin of the bride, attended as maids of honor. Bridesmaids were Elicia Sanchez, Jennifer Hurley, Sherri Muschalek, Leslie Gonzales, cousin of the bride, and Abby Messerli.
Celeste Moon, cousin of the bride, attended as junior bridesmaid.
Katy Harvey, cousin of the groom, and Lexie Mitchell, cousin of the bride, served as flower girls.
Man gets prison term for stealing from employer
BRECKENRIDGE - A former Fairplay man who stole $250,000 over nearly three years from his Silverthorne employer faces an eight-year sentence in prison for the felony theft.David Lantz, 47, siphoned the money from Kaupas Water Labs between November 2002 and September 2005 when he was employed as the business' accountant.
Summit County District Judge Terry Ruckriegle handed down the sentence to Lantz on Monday afternoon in Breckenridge after listening to statements from Lantz's wife, his pastor, his marriage counselor, Lantz himself and Kaupas Water owner Ed Kaupas.
"This community lives and breathes on the employment force working for employers, whether it's ski areas or individual owners such as Mr. Kaupas," Ruckriegle said to Lantz. "When trust is broken to the level that you broke it, it's absolutely imperative that the community understand what the consequences of that are."
Ruckriegle cited Lantz's violation of trust as an accountant, his efforts to hide the thefts by stopping the mail and locking the file cabinet while he was on vacation, and his lack of any attempt to pay Kaupas back as reasons for imposing the sentence he did.
