Pinder says farewell

Director of Education Iris Pinder officially relinquished her post within the ministry yesterday after serving in that position for the past nine years.

Education, Science and Technology Minister Alfred Sears thanked Mrs Pinder for her years of dedicated service to the country.

"She has been at the helm of the Department during a period of tremendous transformation and has been personally involved in those reforms and in those initiatives to improve the quality of education," Minister Sears said.

The former director reflected on her years of service within the Ministry of Education, especially the years she spent among the students.

"I have enjoyed my 38 years as a classroom teacher, a school administrator, deputy director and director.

Christie in flight scare

A private jet flying Prime Minister Perry Christie back to Nassau from the Caribbean was involved in a dramatic landing just hours before he spoke at the renaming ceremony at the country's international airport.

The jet was chartered from a Miami company.

News of the incident was not made public, and although no one on board the aircraft was injured it was a frightening experience. Mr. Christie told a colleague that it was a "harrowing" incident. The aircraft was returning from the CARICOM heads of government meeting in St. Kitts when it developed "technical" problems.

It is understood that the plane suffered a hydraulic leak, which affected the braking system.

The Guardian understands that the aircraft had braking problems and this caused a full alert at the airport with fire tenders racing to the jet as it touched down shortly before midnight.

From humble beginnings, seaside town evolves with the times.

ATLANTIC CITY -- High rollers risk millions here on a single night.

But their wagers are dwarfed when weighed against those placed on the idea that people would chase money, booze and sex on a barrier island in South Jersey.

The city got ahead, nearly lost everything, then rallied. As a compelling drama should, the city's story had a unique setting that will be forever linked to its rise and comeback -- a four-mile seaside walkway called the Atlantic City boardwalk.

Though legendary for most of its history, the boardwalk had a subservient beginning. A hotelier and a train conductor thought it up as a way to keep the beach sand visitors were tracking inside from ruining fine carpets and stuffed chairs.

The first boardwalk, laid across dunes and mosquito marsh in 1870, consisted of flimsy 12-foot sections that could be taken up after the summer.

NASSAU, Bahamas, June 16 (Reuters) - Health officials in the Bahamas are screening illegal immigrants for malaria after an outbreak of the potentially fatal disease was confirmed on a sandy chain of islands southeast of Nassau.

A dozen people on the Exuma islands, where wealthy Europeans, Canadians and Americans have built Bahamian vacation retreats, were discovered to have been stricken by malaria earlier this week.

It was the first known occurrence of the disease in the Bahamas, which depends heavily on income from tourism, in recent memory.

Dr Merceline Dahl-Regis, the government's chief medical officer, has identified the strain of malaria on the Exumas as plasmodium falciparum. Also known as "malignant" or "cerebral" malaria, it causes the most severe and potentially fatal symptoms in humans.

Tournament means business

MOREHEAD CITY — When Tom Bennett talks about the Big Rock Blue Marlin fishing tournament and what it means to the community, a shopping trip to Raleigh comes to mind.

Bennett, who's on the tournament board, stopped in a store in search of a belt with a blue marlin buckle and struck up a conversation with one of the managers.

“She asked me where I was from and when I answered Morehead City, her next question was ‘Do you fish in the Big Rock?'" he recalled.

She went on to explain that her husband fishes in the tournament with five friends. It's something their entire family looks forward to each year.

“Those are the kinds of stories we hear over and over again," Bennett said. “They look forward to this week every year, and they can't wait to get here."

The 48th edition of the tournament kicked off Saturday with the Lady Angler event and continues through June 17.

The Arcade Is Dead, Long Live the Cyber Cafe

I spent the past two weeks in what should have been the glorious sunshine of the Bahamas, but crap weather seemed to follow our cruise ship around.

On the bright side we learned that a motorboat riding 8-foot waves makes my son vomit... repeatedly.

I brought both the Playstation Portable and DS Lite with me on the trip along with a ton of games, for all of that down time when my son is napping. But I ended up spending most of my time playing New Super Mario Bros. and replaying it. I still haven't gotten to a couple of worlds. Dammit.

I also spent a little time playing arcade games. How depressing is that.
