The annual Caribbean Tourism Conference to held in Bahamas
The Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) and the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism have chosen the Westin and Sheraton Grand Bahama Island Our Lucaya Resort on Grand Bahama Island, The Islands of The Bahamas, as the host hotel for the 29th Annual Caribbean Tourism Conference (CTC-29), taking place Oct. 20-25, 2006. The theme of this year's conference is Cooperation, Innovation, Rejuvenation. Creating a Brand New Caribbean.For the second year in a row, conference participants will earn continuing education credits through George Washington University for attending the CTC Master Classes. Master Classes involve in-depth study of topics affecting the tourism industry using case studies and best-practices. They are designed for travel agents as well as general delegates.
Other program highlights include hotel and site inspections for travel agents, destination spotlight presentations for agents, specialized workshops, and the very popular Conde Nast Traveler "My Caribbean Essay Contest" and the Travel + Leisure "Youth Congress."
In addition, there are guided product tours for general delegates, media activities presented by the host venue and by other CTO member countries, and awards events – including the Fourth Annual Travel Writer and Photographer Awards and the Second Annual Creativity in Travel Awards for travel agents.

Minister of Education, Science and Technology Alfred Sears said if all goes well the government's negotiations with the Teachers Union could be wrapping up soon.He explained that the government and the Bahamas Union of Teachers (BUT) seem to be making some headway in regards to the teachers' salaries. Moreover, he said that he is very hopeful and optimistic that there could be an end to the roughly seven-month negotiation process soon.
"I am hopeful that within this week or the early part of next week there may be some resolution. We are still negotiating. But, I am hopeful that we will come to a resolution soon," said Minister Sears. "I think that we are considering to negotiate and the mediation of Bishop Ellis has been helpful and we are considering to exchange our information and see how we can reach an agreement on the issue of salaries."
Negotiations between government representatives and Bahamas Union of Teachers executives fell through in June over the money proposal.

Maintaining that Grand Bahama's economy remains in shambles, its educational system in crisis and residents are living in fear for their lives and livelihoods, Member of Parliament for Lucaya Neko Grant said yesterday that the government's 2006 Budget provides for no immediate relief.Grant, who was making his contribution during the budget debate in the House of Assembly, assailed the Government for its lack of concern for Grand Bahama's economy.
He noted that after the Prime Minister's budget presentation, the headlines read, 'Good news for Grand Bahama.'
"But how good was the news he brought for persons who are having their cars repossessed, for families who are having their homes taken away and the thousands of persons who are in search of jobs?" asked the Lucaya MP.

Melanie Griffin Wednesday (June 7) pledged to continue to lead the fight to ensure that persons living with disabilities have equal opportunity to "make everyday independent living choices" as the non-disabled population. "Independent living for persons with disabilities means having the same right to make choices as well as having the same control in their everyday lives as the non-disabled population; the right to grow up in their own families, to attend schools located within their neighbourhoods, the right to utilize the same form of public transportation, to be employed in any area for which they are qualified, as well as to marry and start families of their own if they so choose," Minister Griffin said.
