Molly Ivins: War debate moves farther from reality

Iraq and the media, the media and Iraq — over and over. Last week was supposed to be a good media week for Iraq — Abu Musab al-Zarqawi was dead. Taken out, we said, by a combination of American and Iraqi troops with Jordanian intelligence.

The churlish might note this was the second time the American military had announced Zarqawi’s death — but, hey, we’ve announced the capture of Osama’s No. 2 guy at least seven or eight times. Others claimed Zarqawi was never that important to begin with, indeed had been built up by our side. Still, that’s a goal for our side, as they say in World Cup play.

I’m so used to one side saying this and the other side saying the opposite that I didn’t even blink over the differences.

I did, however, come to a screeching halt over the right’s reaction to news of a triple suicide at Guantanamo.

Security guard robbery attempt foiled by police

Texaco in Eight Mile Rock may be seeking new means of protection after the establishment was allegedly robbed over the weekend by its security guard, who attempted to steal a substantial amount of cash.

According to reports, sometime around 11:39 p.m. on Saturday, a 29-year old male security officer employed by Sharp Eye Security Firm, reported to police that 10 minutes earlier that same night he had been robbed.

He told officers that while attempting to deposit funds from the said service station into the night vault at Bank of The Bahamas in the Harbour West shopping centre, he was held up by two men, one armed with a handgun, who robbed him of the deposit envelope, containing Texaco funds, then fled on foot.

Basketball: Argentina earns spot in medal round

As the poster boy of Argentine basketball, Spurs star Manu Ginobili mentors his country's younger players through a regular, sometimes daily, series of e-mails.

Most offer encouragement and advice. The batch leading up to the FIBA Americas Under-18 Championship for Men also contained a request: Don't let me down in my adopted hometown.

With the favored United States watching closely from the stands, Argentina did its hoops role model proud, fighting off a determined Puerto Rico team 79-77 Thursday at Greehey Arena.

"It's an honor to play in the same city as Manu," said point guard Diego Gerbaudo, who had 18 points and nine assists. "We're very appreciative of everything he does for us. He's opened a big door for us in Argentina."

In addition to advancing to the medal round, Argentina (2-0) qualified for the 2007 FIBA U-19 World Championships.

Freeport Jet Wash establishes Parts Department Call Centre

Freeport Jet Wash and Auto Mart Ltd. has taken customer service to a new level with the introduction of its new Parts Department Call Centre.

With the establishment of the innovative Call Centre, Financial Controller La-Keisha Wilmott says Freeport Jet Wash is now "ahead of the pack."

"I am not aware of any other 'automotive' company offering this type of service in The Bahamas," Wilmott said, adding that Freeport Jet Wash is not only increasing efficiency but it looks as if it is also tackling 'Bahamian time' single handedly.

Grand Bahamian businesses are growing, and the work place is becoming more complex because of deadlines and time constraints. Freeport Jet Wash recognized these challenges and saw the need to develop a Parts Department Call Centre making the entire process very simple to use.

Dayton estimates worth between $4.4 million and $17 million

WASHINGTON - Sen. Mark Dayton, who spent about $12 million of his own money to fund his 2000 race, might have faced financial ruin had he tried to self-fund another race this year. The Minnesota Democrat estimated his assets at between $4.4 million and $17 million.

The House and Senate released lawmakers' annual financial disclosure forms Wednesday. The report by Dayton, a wealthy department store heir, lists hundreds of individual stocks and funds.

The reports require that values be listed only in broad ranges. Sometimes, lawmakers will list the values more specifically.

Before announcing last year he would not be seeking re-election, Dayton had planned to raise money from outside sources for the campaign, saying he couldn't afford to self-fund again.
