Tourism needs 'new ideas'

Outgoing president of the Caribbean Hotel Association (CHA), St Lucian hotelier Berthia Parle, has urged tourism officials to keep upgrading performance levels in order for the Caribbean to truly attain world class status.

Speaking at the opening of the four-day Caribbean Hotel Industry Conference (CHIC) at Hyatt Regency Hotel, in Miami, Parle said this was necessary to meet consumers' demand.

She told more than 900 delegates: "Consumers today demand an authentic Caribbean experience delivered by warm, caring, hospitable employees with the highest performance levels.

"As we all seek to promote the sustainability of our destinations, our products and services must also be of a sustainable nature. We must open our minds to new marketing ideas and communicating initiatives, to stepping out of our comfort zone and living up to our principles," said Ms Parle.

Travel Agent Charged With Defrauding Vacationers

MINEOLA---A Hempstead man has been arrested and charged with masterminding and executing a plan that allegedly defrauded hundreds of travelers out of tens of thousands of dollars.

Jerry Andrew Cummings, 40, of Hempstead, has been charged with two counts of third degree grand larceny, scheme to defraud in the first degree and grand larceny in the fourth degree.

"We believe this defendant is responsible for the theft of hundreds of thousands of dollars from vacationers, travel agencies, and credit card companies," said Nassau County district attorney Kathleen Rice. "His elaborate cons have left people without their vacations and, many times, stranded or fearing for their safety in foreign countries."

Cummings is being arrested for the second time in two months as a travel agent who has victimized and stranded hundreds of travelers and travel agencies across the United States and Canada over the past five years.

PM Christie in air scare

A private jet flying the Prime Minister Perry Christie, back to Nassau from St. Kitts was involved in a dramatic landing just hours before he spoke at the re-naming ceremony at the country's international airport.

News of the incident was not made public and although no one on board the aircraft was in any way injured it was a frightening experience. Mr. Christie told a colleague that it was a "harrowing" incident. The plane was returning from the CARICOM heads of government meeting in St. Kitts when it developed "technical" problems. The Guardian understands that the aircraft had braking problems and this caused a full alert at the airport with fire tenders racing to the jet as it touched down, shortly before midnight.

Also on board the plane were Fred Mitchell, minister of Foreign Affairs; Missouri Sherman-Peters, permanent secretary of Foreign Affairs; Leonard Archer, the Bahamas Ambassador to CARICOM, and the PM's personal protection officer.
