Melanie Griffin Wednesday (June 7) pledged to continue to lead the fight to ensure that persons living with disabilities have equal opportunity to "make everyday independent living choices" as the non-disabled population. "Independent living for persons with disabilities means having the same right to make choices as well as having the same control in their everyday lives as the non-disabled population; the right to grow up in their own families, to attend schools located within their neighbourhoods, the right to utilize the same form of public transportation, to be employed in any area for which they are qualified, as well as to marry and start families of their own if they so choose," Minister Griffin said.
GBPA executive says no terminations at companyGrand Bahama Port Authority Chief Executive Officer Albert Miller quashed reports yesterday that Bahamians will be terminated from the company.Commenting that Freeport is a place of rumours, Sir Albert said however, there could be areas where there will be changes. Two well-placed executives have resigned from the GBPA over the last three weeks. Both of them are Bahamian. Barry Malcolm, who held the executive vice-president post over the last five years, resigned a week ago today. His portfolio included business development and licensing. Julian Francis, the former governor of the Central Bank of The Bahamas, reportedly tendered his resignation exactly one year to the day he began on June 1. He served for eight and a half years as Governor of The Central Bank of The Bahamas before retiring on May 31, 2005 to take up the executive position at the GBPA.

However, it was officially introduced to the Grand Bahama community last month, with a special product exhibition and contractors' seminar at the facility based on Peel Street. Some 150 persons from the industry attended the function. Henri Ho, President and CEO of Steel HQ Bahamas Ltd., confirmed that full operation of its new Freeport Plant was but weeks away. The company, a subsidiary of China Building Systems Hong Kong, will develop and manufacture pre-engineered cold-rolled steel framing components for the construction industry.
