Eye of the storm

PERHAPS the most dangerous stunt Johnny Depp, as Captain Jack Sparrow, performed in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest was eluding hurricanes during the treacherous tropical storm season in the Bahamas.

"We were evacuated on a daily basis," he reveals. "There was a daily monitoring of the National Hurricane Centre when we were down there in Grand Bahamas.

"You would be watching them closely and you'd see them turn and there were memories of what happened during Hurricane Katrina in Louisiana and Mississippi."

Shooting Dead Man's Chest – the third Pirates instalment set for release next year – back-to-back in the Bahamas and West Indies with a combined budget of $300 million, involved more than 600 people.

"It was really strange," Depp says, "sitting there with (director) Gore Verbinski and (producer) Jerry Bruckheimer and the rest of the producers, watching for the storm.

Virtually the World

According to the company, this is due to rapid international expansion highlighting the need for a name that is easily spelt, pronounced and recognised in all key markets, hence dropping the S and adding .com.

Bookings was founded in Amsterdam ten years ago and has swiftly grown to become one of Europes leading online hotel reservation companies, with 12 offices in 10 countries.

Stef Norden, CEO of Booking.com stated: Our aim is to be as close to our customers as possible. Therefore, we have invested in local offices, developed a website that is available in numerous languages and expanded our multilingual customer services team. Booking.com also features customer hotel reviews to enable visitors to make informed choices. So apart from the name change, everything stays the same.

'International Flava' comes to Nassau

Hybrid Events is an international company with ties to the US, Jamaica and The Bahamas. Recently, they put on a show at Club Nirvana featuring international DJ's, Black Chiney and "Omen." The event started out slowly but gradually gained momentum and impressed everyone who attended.

Kandice Hanna- the sole Bahamian in the mix of Jamaican, American pottage and a businesswoman in her own right with several companies to her name (including the phenomenal KhanAali Designs, which focuses on public relations, graphic design and lots more) - sat with us for a few minutes and gave us insight into Hybrid's interest in the Bahamian Party Scene.

Weekender: Why did Hybrid choose The Bahamas for this event?

Kandice: This is how it all began... In my junior year of university, I had to take this course, 'Public Relations Campaigns' for my major.

Tourism needs 'new ideas'

Outgoing president of the Caribbean Hotel Association (CHA), St Lucian hotelier Berthia Parle, has urged tourism officials to keep upgrading performance levels in order for the Caribbean to truly attain world class status.

Speaking at the opening of the four-day Caribbean Hotel Industry Conference (CHIC) at Hyatt Regency Hotel, in Miami, Parle said this was necessary to meet consumers' demand.

She told more than 900 delegates: "Consumers today demand an authentic Caribbean experience delivered by warm, caring, hospitable employees with the highest performance levels.

"As we all seek to promote the sustainability of our destinations, our products and services must also be of a sustainable nature. We must open our minds to new marketing ideas and communicating initiatives, to stepping out of our comfort zone and living up to our principles," said Ms Parle.
