Jane's World of Craft

After many years of faithful service in the Cayman Islands Postal Service, Jane Webster decided to keep busy during her retirement, by making marvelously imaginative craft ornaments.

The range of her work is as wide as her imagination, and Ms Webster makes virtually anything out of virtually anything.

"I started in Summer 2002. I was operating a pre-school and during the summer some of the parents asked me if I could take some older children during the summer vacation. I had to find something for them to do, so I went to the craft store and bought some craft materials.

"When it was time for them to go back to school, at the end of the summer, I thought it was time to do something myself.

"The first thing I did was a bunch of grapes out of purple beads; I said to myself: 'This looks good,' and tried to do some more.

Survival Summit hailed a success

Sir, it is truly a pleasure to be able to return to the pages of your daily as a contributing writer after being away for a while.

Today's topic is 'Survival summit, just what our souls needed.'

My brothers and sisters in Christ, it was truly a wonderful week after experiencing the most awesome move of God that I have seen in my life here on this earth.

For those of you who don't know what I am talking about, I am talking about the Survival Summit held at St. John's Cathedral last week and hosted by Bishop Godfrey Williams.

My, my, my, what a revival that was. I must pause to encourage Bishop Williams, his lovely wife Lady Iris Williams, young brother Williams (son), the ushers and all the persons who made that summit the success that it was.

Agassi, Sharapova cruise into third round; Nestor and Knowles ...

LONDON (AP) - Tennis players no longer get to rest after the first game of a set, yet there was Andre Agassi at Wimbledon on Thursday, sitting in his chair and sipping his drink until the chair umpire leaned over to tell him to move along.

Hey, give an old guy a break, would ya? Facing another backward-cap-wearing, twentysomething opponent on the hottest day of the tournament, the 36-year-old Agassi eliminated Andreas Seppi of Italy 6-4, 7-6 (2), 6-4 to reach the third round.

Agassi's back was feeling better and his game was looking better than in his opening match, both of which are important given the next task at his last Wimbledon: an old guard vs. new guard showdown against French Open champion Rafael Nadal.

"It's been too long, as far as I'm concerned, since I've felt good and was in a place where I could at least enjoy what's going on out there," said Agassi, the oldest man to reach Wimbledon's third round since Jimmy Connors was 38 in 1991.

Tournament means business

MOREHEAD CITY — When Tom Bennett talks about the Big Rock Blue Marlin fishing tournament and what it means to the community, a shopping trip to Raleigh comes to mind.

Bennett, who's on the tournament board, stopped in a store in search of a belt with a blue marlin buckle and struck up a conversation with one of the managers.

“She asked me where I was from and when I answered Morehead City, her next question was ‘Do you fish in the Big Rock?'" he recalled.

She went on to explain that her husband fishes in the tournament with five friends. It's something their entire family looks forward to each year.

“Those are the kinds of stories we hear over and over again," Bennett said. “They look forward to this week every year, and they can't wait to get here."

The 48th edition of the tournament kicked off Saturday with the Lady Angler event and continues through June 17.
