HSA Lab works towards Caribbean accreditation

The Laboratory Services Department at Health Services Authority (HAS) is one of numerous medical laboratories across the Caribbean working on raising its standards so it can become accredited. Getting prepared for accreditation is part of the initiative to establish a Caribbean accreditation body to ensure that medical laboratories in the region meet international standards.

The HSA Laboratory Services Manager Joan Terry said getting accreditation is a lengthy process and she is hoping that HSA will be the first lab among 23 countries to achieve this goal.

"The benefit of getting accreditation is that your standards are recognized internationally," said Ms Terry. "And the organization benefits because being recognized provides assurance of the quality of our services throughout the region."

To prepare for accreditation, Ms Terry, and Medical Technologist, Judith Clarke took a laboratory and quality management programme, which involved training sessions at numerous countries including Trinidad, Dominican Republic and the Bahamas over a three-year period.

Child porn warnings

Child pornography is increasingly rearing its ugly head in The Bahamas, according to Minister of Social Services and Community Development, Melanie Griffin.

Mrs Griffin, who spoke on the issue in the House of Assembly Thursday, told parents not only to monitor their children's movements but also to get to know the people with whom they associate.

"Parents also need to warn their children about having their pictures taken by others," she said. "What may seem to be an innocent, harmless act may be distorted and altered for evil and illegal purposes."

She added, "Particularly, when somebody wants your children, when they go to any function, to take off their clothes and take photos, a flag should go up immediately."

In giving further tips, Mrs Griffin said parents should not place computers in their children's bedroom but rather in a general area in the home, accessible to all.

Lucaya MP claims government lacks concern for Grand Bahama's ...

Maintaining that Grand Bahama's economy remains in shambles, its educational system in crisis and residents are living in fear for their lives and livelihoods, Member of Parliament for Lucaya Neko Grant said yesterday that the government's 2006 Budget provides for no immediate relief.

Grant, who was making his contribution during the budget debate in the House of Assembly, assailed the Government for its lack of concern for Grand Bahama's economy.

He noted that after the Prime Minister's budget presentation, the headlines read, 'Good news for Grand Bahama.'

"But how good was the news he brought for persons who are having their cars repossessed, for families who are having their homes taken away and the thousands of persons who are in search of jobs?" asked the Lucaya MP.

Exotic lizard threatens other species in Florida

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - With a ferocious little predator called the northern curlytail lizard, South Florida may finally have the exotic reptile it deserves.

Native to rocky areas of the Bahamas and nearby islands, the lizard has made a home in sections of southeast Florida that mimic its native habitat, such as sidewalks, parking lots and strip malls.

As it spread through coastal areas, it has crowded out native lizards and devoured the prey of native mockingbirds, grackles and shrikes.

"They're the T-Rex of our little ground critters," said Hank Smith, wildlife biologist for the Florida Park Service and affiliate research assistant professor at Florida Atlantic University's Wilkes Honors College in Jupiter.

"They're larger than our native lizards that occur along the coastline, the green anole, the green racerunner.
