Depp's on a rollJOHNNY Depp frequently refers to his life and career as "the ride". Like most Hollywood actors, his particular journey has been something of a rollercoaster ride and right now he couldn't be higher off the ground.Depp admits that even his mother, Betty Sue, was impressed when he landed on the cover of Newsweek recently and his star power drew comparisons between him and Tom Cruise. "He's a pretty buff young man, Tom Cruise," Depp says in Los Angeles, grinning from under a grey hat. "I haven't physically grown so I don't think I'm any bigger than him." But while Cruise, 44 on July 3, routinely tops lists as Hollywood's most powerful and bankable star, it's 43-year-old Depp who has the acting credibility, the reputation for uncanny choices of material.
Floating into the record bookThe MSC Marina made local history Friday when the 997-foot-long container ship steamed into Port Everglades as the largest cargo vessel to ever tie up at the facility."It's exciting for Port Everglades," port spokeswoman Ellen Kennedy said. "It's a definite indication of our growth." . Exclusive: Pirates' Bill "Davy Jones" NighyBill Nighy may be one of England's most underrated actors, but most people will recognize him from the dour demeanor of his characters and his distinctively dry delivery. Considering the startling appearance of his character Davy Jones in Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, it may be the only way to recognize Nighy when he takes on that villainous role. Playing the bad guy is nothing new to Nighy, having cut his teeth with the role of the ancient vampire Viktor in the "Underworld" movies. More people may remember loving him as rock star Billy Mack in Richard Curtis' Love Actually or as Simon Pegg's zombie stepfather in Shaun of the Dead. With that kind of diverse background, it's not surprising that director Gore Verbinski thought Nighy would be the perfect actor to turn Davy Jones into the type of bad guy that fans of the first "Pirates of the Caribbean" would love. |
