Singapore gaming: Island dreams

SINGAPORE -- Mark Advent, the man behind the New York-New York megaresort on the Strip that helped change the face of Las Vegas, is hoping to bring some of his creativity to Singapore.

Advent is chairman of Las Vegas-based Eighth Wonder, one of three bidders for a tropical casino-resort site on Sentosa Island, just off the main coast of Singapore. This will be the second casino-resort in the small city-state that has turned to gambling in its bid to reinvent itself as a fun tourism destination. With the opening of these world-class integrated resorts in 2009-2010 the authorities are hoping to double visitor arrivals to 17 million by 2015 and triple tourism spending to $19.2 billion.

The first site, a 51-acre piece of prime waterfront real estate in the Marina Bay financial district, was awarded in May to Las Vegas Sands Corp, to develop a $3.2 billion resort with a strong convention and entertainment component.

Men could play best of seven national series

It hasn't happened since the Club 9000 Outlaws outlasted the D S Reds from Exuma in seven games in 2001, but now both island associations are calling for it, and it just might spice up one of the most unlikely championship series, which is already highly anticipated.

Abaco has never played for the national title in men's softball, and the island of Eleuthera which was once dubbed 'The Softball Capital of The Bahamas', is making a return after 10-plus years. New Providence is missing for the first time in over 20 years, and Exuma which has won two of the past four nationals, is suddenly in a two-year drought. All of this can be traced to arguably the best pitcher in the country, Edney 'The JC Heat' Bethel, who will now be playing in the championship series for the seventh straight year and going after his fourth title over that span.

Benchmark earnings up 18%

Benchmark (Bahamas) Lim-ited, a financial portfolio management firm traded on BISX under the ticker symbol BBL, released its third quarter earnings on Monday, and for the most part, financial analysts liked what they saw.

Net earnings were $1.2 million, or 24 cents per share, 8 cents per share higher than the same quarter in 2005. Benchmark reported an 18 percent increase in net assets over the first three quarters, the primary growth stemming from a four-fold increase in cash.

Despite the good news for Benchmark, the company's share value remained static on BISX at 80 cents per share.

The Book value of Bench-mark, a calculation that compares actual assets to which shareholders are entitled to the number of outstanding shares, pegs shareholders' stake at $1.27 each, leading industry analysts to declare Benchmark a good buy considering the security's current 80-cent listing.
