It's up anchor and around the world on these cruises

World cruises have become so popular that four cruise lines are enhancing their itineraries, two lines are adding second ships and a fifth cruise line has also arrived on the scene with a global offering. Crystal Cruises, Holland America Line, Regent Seven Seas and Cunard have dominated world cruise offerings in recent years.

But to meet growing demand, Holland America and Cunard are each adding a second ship, and Silversea Cruises has decided to launch a world voyage.

World cruises, which usually depart in January, are about 100 days long and visit some of the world's greatest cities, such as Athens, Cairo, London, Paris, Rio, Rome and Sydney.

For people who can't escape for several months, world cruises can be broken into shorter segments ranging from 11 to 80 days.

Cruise Lines Add ‘More or Less’ to a Week at Sea

11.5 million passengers in 2005, according to the Cruise Lines International Association, are still eager to expand their market, given that more than 80 percent of Americans have yet to cruise. The surest way to achieve that goal, say cruise line officials, is through a sampler experience a few days at sea as opposed to a weeklong commitment.

Not only is it more affordable Carnival, for example, has four-day cruises in the western Caribbean for as little as $179 a person its also more in tune with the way Americans, ever pressed for time, like to vacation these days. Not everybody has seven days to travel, said David Brams, president of World Wide Cruises, a travel agency based in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

The trend goes beyond the high seas: Even in river barging, an increasingly popular form of cruising, the short vacation is beginning to take hold.

Atlantis mourns 'Butch'

Time seemed to have stopped in the Atlantis Crown Ballroom as friends and family members from around The Bahamas and the world gathered to pay tribute to the life of international developer Howard Kerzner.

Grief-stricken family and friends of 'Butch', as he was affectionately called, could not hide their pain as they mourned the loss of "the face of the future."

The 42-year-old hotel and resort tycoon was killed, along with three others, on October 11 when the Robinson 44 helicopter in which they were travelling crashed into a building on The Dominican Republic's north coast.

Prime Minister Perry Christie said he now has to share in the unexpected and untimely end of a man who was widely loved and regarded as a beacon of the future. "Such is the loss of Howard 'Butch' Kerzner, gone too soon," he sombrely said.
