Junior golfers drop one spot

The Bahamas Junior golf team fell from second to third in the second round of the 19th Annual Caribbean Junior Amateur Golf Championships, but are still in the hunt to win the country's first title. Today, the golfers will play their final rounds at the Rio Mar golf course in Rio Grande with local favourite Puerto Rico holding the lead with 107 points. Trinidad & Tobago came on strong late in the first round this week to overtake the Bahamas for second with 80.5 points. However, team Bahamas is hanging tough in third place with 79 points.

"For us to win the title its going to be tougher now," said Bahamas Golf Federation president Agatha Delancey. She told the Nassau Guardian that Puerto Rico and Trinidad are usually the teams to beat the CAJGC. "The deficit between us and Puerto Rico is a large one to make up, though not impossible.

Itinerary for week of July 9

Take the A train to the Middle Ages. The New York subway takes visitors to the Cloisters, the Metropolitan Museum of Art's medieval outpost in northern Manhattan. This complex of early European architecture includes parts of five cloisters seamlessly assembled to house other works of art. Stone terraces and gardens offer spectacular views.

New for summer visitors is a cafe where you can sip cappuccino sitting under the arches beside flower-filled courtyards. Recent renovations also include newly installed stained-glass windows. The museum now offers an audio guide, a lightweight, palm-sized MP3 player with tours in English, French or Spanish.

But the museum is best-known for something from the 15th century rather than the 21st — the world-famous Unicorn Tapestries, seven woven wall hangings that depict the hunt for a unicorn through luxuriant forests thronged with courtiers, knights and ladies.

The Arcade Is Dead, Long Live the Cyber Cafe

I spent the past two weeks in what should have been the glorious sunshine of the Bahamas, but crap weather seemed to follow our cruise ship around.

On the bright side we learned that a motorboat riding 8-foot waves makes my son vomit... repeatedly.

I brought both the Playstation Portable and DS Lite with me on the trip along with a ton of games, for all of that down time when my son is napping. But I ended up spending most of my time playing New Super Mario Bros. and replaying it. I still haven't gotten to a couple of worlds. Dammit.

I also spent a little time playing arcade games. How depressing is that.

Hard days night for doubles teams

WIMBLEDON, England — It was a sporting version of from here to eternity, tennis almost without end, amen. It was a doubles match that didn't quite double everyone's fun, even the two guys who survived.

The men's singles quarterfinals? They were interesting to a point. Roger Federer was perfection once again. There were a couple of surprises, Marco Baghdatis and Jonas Bjorkman also moving on. And on a Wednesday of rain delays, Rafael Nadal didn't even move onto the court.

The remarkable thing is the doubles team of Mark Knowles and Daniel Nestor was able to move anywhere.

They needed two days and 6 hours, 9 minutes to defeat Simon Aspelin and Todd Perry 5-7, 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-3, 23-21 in the longest doubles match in Wimbledon and Grand Slam history.Six hours, 9 minutes, and two days.

A 'Pirates' Life for Naomie

LOS ANGELES -- Naomie Harris almost didn't land a part in director Gore Verbinski's "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" because of her looks.

"Gore didn't actually want me for the part because he said that I was actually too pretty and he didn't want anybody pretty," she reveals. "He wanted an older actress. The casting director, Denise Chamian ... persuaded Gore to audition me. When I walked into the room, he said, 'You're going to have to do this like three maybe four times so okay, let's just have a go.' And so I read it once and then he went, 'How would you like to come to the Bahamas?' It was great."

Verbinski didn't have to worry about Harris' good looks though, once she transformed into the character Tia Dalma, a mysterious Caribbean soothsayer from Captain Jack Sparrow's (Johnny Depp) past.
